Raise the Flags — Award-Winning Garden Iris Painting on ACM

$3,100.00

Original Painting | One of a Kind

Raise the Flags is a testament to joyful endurance and the unruly poetry of observation. Over two months, I returned daily to the iris blooms in my garden—catching each stem as it surged open, racing the clock of its own brief life.

Painted entirely from life, one stem at a time, the composition holds the full emotional arc of a blooming season: tightly wound buds, triumphant petals, saturated fading blooms, and one lone dropped flower—its spathe still clinging to the stem, but no seed pod formed that year. The absence becomes part of the story, a quiet visual rest that speaks as loudly as color.

A swirl of bumblebee species moves through the stems like sparks of motion, pollinating the space between flowers. A fiery skipper butterfly pauses on the largest bloom at the right, mirroring the invitation within my work: to look longer, notice more, and find joy in the momentary. Ants climb upward, threading scale into the composition and grounding the scene in honest ecology.

This piece was awarded 3rd Prize Overall in the American Women Artists 2023 Annual Online Juried Show, an organization where I hold Signature Membership, reflecting a 30+ year career shaped by illustration, design, and a deep love of the garden’s rhythm.

Paintesd color meets drawn life here—not to document perfection, but to capture the joy of paying attention. The distressed ground and graphite drawn insects reward slow looking, offering collectors a piece that reveals itself gently over time.
